Automated Sample Preparation and Analysis

The FREESTYLE system is probably the most adaptable robotic equipment for sample preparation on the market. With this almost universally applicable system range, numerous processing steps can be automated.

As an example automation suits ideally in the areas of food, animal feed, environmental, and forensics analysis conducted in pharmaceutical laboratories or other fields of application.

The FREESTYLE system takes on daily routine tasks in the laboratory, but also offers users a unique opportunity to combine specific working steps that were previously carried out individually.

Day and night and even over the weekend.

Flexible Configuration and Combination

The FREESTYLE modules can be individually combined and retrofitted. The user obtains the opportunity to adapt the FREESTYLE to the changing requirements of his everyday work, and the system can be upgraded to cater for newly required functions at any time.

If different modules are installed, e.g. the SPE module together with the EVAporation module, these functions can be used individually or in combination. The required function is determined exclusively through method selection in the software.

Methods are saved, and can be called up at any time or mixed in sample lists. There is no need for any mechanical changes or conversions.

The FREESTYLE BASIC consists of a xyz-robot including injection pump, sample loop, solvent distribution and double-walled needle.

The FREESTYLE system can be equipped with the necessary modules suitable for the intended purpose.

GPC Module

Sample clean-up via GPC (gel permeation chromatography) is used for all samples in the analysis of residues and contaminants and is therefore universally applicable.

Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) for oil removal (clean-up) in samples containing more than 3% oil.

The FREESTYLE GPC is a fully automated chromatographic sample preparation system, that is used for example for clean-up of food, feed and environmental samples. It complies in all areas with the requirements of general methods, e.g. L 00.00-34, EPA 3640A.

EVAporation Module

The FREESTYLE system with EVAporation module concentrates all types of organic solvents around the clock to a precise end volume between 5.0 mL and 0.2 mL, optional with solvent exchange. The end volume can be selected individually for each sample.

SPE Module

The FREESTYLE SPE has unique possibilities for sample preparation using solid phase extraction (SPE). Each manual SPE method which has already proven of value in the laboratory can be automated in a quick and easy manner. The application fields are wide: from mycotoxin and environmental analysis up to forensic applications and samples of doping control.

HPLC Direct Injection Module

For direct injection to LC systems. The sample preparation is done via the SPE module (Solid Phase Extraction), via the SPE module with online EVAporation or via the GPC module  (Gel Permeation Chromatography) and the EVAporation module. The HPLC Direct Injection module can also be used after a solvent exchange with the EVAporation module.

ThermELUTE Module

FREESTYLE ThermELUTE™ allows complete automation of sample preparation and analysis of Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2 and M1 as well as Ochratoxin A and Zearalenone in all regulated matrices.

Freestyle XANA

Sample Preparation of water samples with a volume of 1 L up to 10 L

In water analysis large-volume or particulate-laden samples often have to be handled. The robotic system FREESTYLE XANA has been specifically developed for sample preparation of large-volume water samples, for example of drinking water, raw water or river water.

With a positive pressure of up to 4 bar during loading, samples with suspended matter in many cases can also be pushed through the SPE columns. Without the need for supervision, the system processes samples reliably over 24 hours and 7 days / week through all stages beginning with the raw sample up to filling into GC vials.

  • Developed for unattended 24/7 operation
  • 24 samples are loaded in groups of 3 for sequential throughput
  • Use of 3 mL and 6 mL SPE columns made of polypropylene with MACHEREY-NAGEL closures
  • Liquid and pressure tight up to 4 bar
  • Free adjustable flow rates of 0.1 – 30 mL/min
  • Drying with pre-set nitrogen pressure
  • Up to 8 solvents selectable for conditioning and washing

  1. The gripper of the SPE module transports the SPE columns to the required position on the FREESTYLE platform and executes the elution steps.
  2. In the processing station on the FREESTYLE platform are 3 SPE columns simultaneously being processed in two blocks: in Block 1 the 3 columns are being conditioned, loaded and washed whereas in the subsequent Block 2 the previous 3 columns are being dried in parallel.
  3. The external processing station is the control centre of the water module including the mechanics for pumping 1-10 L samples, valves and sensors for process monitoring.
  4. Sample rack with 24 positions for 1 L sample containers each; optional 3 sample containers with up to 10 L volume each can be connected with the system.
  5. Flexible, easy hanging of racks for SPE columns and elution containers on the FREESTYLE platform.
  6. Optional: EVAporation module for precise concentration to a continuously adjustable end volume of 5.0 mL to 0.2 mL; direct elution from the SPE column into the EVAporation chamber.
